There was a great article 2 weeks ago in the New York Times all about the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers also known as OFW’s. The story called A Good Provider is One Who Leaves discussed the benefits and challenges faced by over 3 million Filipino workers that live abroad to send support back home to their loved one’s.
The Philippines is the 4th largest remittance market in the world making up about 14% of the country’s GDP! This story did a good job at presenting the mixed blessing of remittances while giving an interesting look into the lives of the OFW’s that send them.

I love to mix it up a bit with Tagalog or Taglish phrases and words. Lately I’ve been getting emails asking if I’m Filipino or even better emails which are written only in Tagalog! So I thought I’d set the record straight and let you know “Hindi po ako Pilipino!”
Here’s my language trick for those of you that might not speak Tagalog but would like to learn some conversational phrases.
My cheat sheet

Not only is Aryty a fast and simple way to buy eload for any Globe,Smart or Sun cellphone but is also one of the cheapest ways to buy load as well.
Each time you decide to send a load to a loved one in the Philippines or add load to your roaming phone we give you the load choices available with the cost in U.S.D. Although this price may change from time to time due to a change in exchange rates there are never any extra service fees or hidden charges! You will always know what you are paying upfront.
Currently we only show the prices to buy load to our registered users but that is about to change. We realize many of you would like to know the price before using our free trial or having to register a credit card. Several people have asked if there is an extra charge to pay by credit card or some type of minimum purchase and the answer is no!
Load is typically delivered into the Philippine phone within seconds of you clicking “Send” to make the purchase. An SMS confirmation is also delivered by the mobile carrier and Aryty to let the person who received load know who sent it to them. You are able to view all transactions and charges whenever you wish simply by logging into your account.

Online gaming continues to boom in the Philippines with Ragnarok and World of Warcraft among the most frequently played.
As with anything so popular there are new threats to watch out for. The BBC reports that due to the value of the digital goods within the games that a stolen WoW account may be worth more than that of a stolen credit card. A credit card and it’s underlying info may fetch about $6 but a WoW account with decent assets could be worth $10 or more. No doubt this new black market will entice hackers.
The Philippine’s has some of my favorite dishes like sinigang na baboy and chicken adobo. There are others I think could be in a Fear Factor elimination round like Balut. Something about nearly developed duck embryo doesn’t seem appetizing to me.
Check out this wana be balut eater. The video was shot at Power 106 in LA, home of pinoyDJ Virman. It’s hilarious!
I admit it’s fun to make chikka when it comes to pinoy celebrity gossip. So many times I use Aryty to send a load just to get the whole story by text from a friend in the Philippines. So here’s the latest from Makatijust in-case you haven’t heard.
Male model and crush ng bayan Borgy Manotoc got into a fight at my favorite night spot Embassy earlier this week with Carlo Pardo De Tavera. The evening ended with Carlo being admitted into the hospital and two different stories of what went down that night. Typical of any bar fight, a girl was involved, which in this case was Borgy’s girlfriend Ornusa Cadness who is gorgeous on a bad day!
Borgy as you may know is grandson of the late Ferdinand Marcos and was reported earlier to be seeking the mayoral post in Manila City. He’s also host of a tv show whose name probably best sums up this incident. The show is called “It’s a Guy Thing!” If you know more to the story leave your comments please and happy chikka!
Yahoo Messenger is one of the most popular ways for Filipino’s to keep in touch with their loved one’s back home in the Philippines. Today a new service launched called imo.im that allows you to access your YM account from the web at www.imo.im and link it with any of your other IM accounts. It’s easy to use and you don’t need to register since you sign into your messenger accounts from their site!
Once you are logged in the fun begins because imo.im lets you start group chats with friends from any of your messenger buddy list including MSN, AIM, Yahoo and Google Talk. You just enter a buddy you want to bring into a chat and they get an invitation link to join the fun! It’s like an instant messenger party line.
Make sure you try it out next time you’re ready to chat and remember you heard it here first! Aryty!?
Church, egg hunts and chocolate rabbits. Easter Sunday is finally here. Don’t forget to put some some Globe, Smart or Sun load in your loved one’s easter basket too! Happy Easter po!
