Typhoon Ondoy Devastates Luzon

by Clarissa

Video of Typhoon Ondoy in Metro Manila

Over the weekend, the non- stop rains and strong winds brought by Tropical Storm Ondoy to Metro Manila and its surrounding areas have claimed over 140 lives, with 32 still reported missing.  Widespread flooding has made roads impassable, stranding thousands of commuters, and has displaced over 400,000 families  from their homes.

Although the weather has subsided as Typhoon Ondoy continues its drift outward to the South China Sea, the worst is not yet over. Many areas which were in the path of the storm are still without electricity and water. Scores of families are living in make-shift shelters with limited facilities and personnel.     There is deep concern about the spread of diseases as a result of the overflowing of canals and creeks with contaminated water.

The economic and social impact on the Philippines is severe.  With already very scarce human and financial resources, all those involved in relief efforts are urging everyone to do what they can to help, especially calling out to Filipino expatriates.  OFW’s have traditionally  been our country’s heroes by sending home billions of dollars in remittances, propping up the economy as a result.  Now more than ever there is a dire need to reach out and do what we can to aid our kababayans who have suffered greatly due to this calamity.

Tita Cory Laid to Rest

by Clarissa

August 9, 2009 was the burial day of former Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino.  This day was declared a holiday to allow the millions of citizens who loved and admired her to pay their last respects before she was finally laid to rest beside her husband, Ninoy Aquino.

Tita Cory was beloved by the people, and remained extremely influential in Philippine politics even long after her presidency.  She was diagnosed with colon cancer in March 2008.  Her battle with the illness ended last Saturday.

Droves of loyal followers and supporters came to view Cory’s remains at the Manila Cathedral.  Thousands of people waited in long lines and stayed late hours for the chance to see her one last time and mourn their loss.    It took the flatbed truck that carried Cory’s coffin over 8 hours to travel only 15 miles  from the Cathedral  to her final resting place in a family plot beside her husband, Ninoy Aquino Jr. in Sucat due to the crowds that filled the streets.

Filipino Prisoners Honor Michael Jackson

by Clarissa

Ok, I know I’m a little late posting but our summer at Aryty has been busy.

With the recent loss of legend Michael Jackson thousands of tributes worldwide have surfaced. This routine performed by more than 1500 inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines to Michael Jackson’s hit Thriller is definately one of the best! Michael will be missed by all!

Whether in the JBWKZ or jail, Pinoys have great dance talent! :-)

Our New Smart Plug N’ Talk USB!!

by Clarissa

Smart Plug N Talk

We finally got our new Smart Plug n’ Talk USB which just arrived from the Philippines. Yeah!

It’s so cool!  Ang cute n’ya, mukha siyang maliit na thumb drive that plugs directly onto a USB port on your computer.  But best of all, it’s practical, saves you money and keeps you connected with your loved ones in the Philippines.    You can use it anywhere in the world from any computer with a USB port and a broadband internet connection, kasi portable talaga ito.

Plug N’ Talk was  launched last December by Smart Philippines specifically for Filipinos (and non-Filipinos too!) abroad,  making it more affordable for our kababayans all over the world to  call and send text messages  to any Philippine landline or cell phone.  Just like a roaming SIM, your family and friends in the Philippines can call or text you and only be charged local rates.   But unlike a roaming SIM, your incoming calls are free and when you call the Philippines using your Smart Plug N’ Talk, you are charged closer to local rates- Voice calls are only P7.50 to other Smart phones, and P8.50 to Globe or Sun Cellular phones.  Outgoing texts are just P1.00 to Smart phones, and P2.00 to Globe or Sun Cellular phones!  Mas mura talaga!

Here you can find Smart’s portal for overseas Pinoys, with more information on Smart Plug N’ Talk rates, where to buy Plug N’ Talk, and answers to frequently asked questions about Plug N’ Talk.  In the US, there are a number of retailers in Southern California, New York State and in the Chicago area, or you can also buy Plug N’ Talk  online, prices range from $50-$65.  A good idea is to buy it on your next trip to the Philippines,  o kaya makiusap sa mga kamaganak na biyabiyahe papunta sa inyong lugar na bumili para sa inyo- P1,800 lang.

The package comes with the Plug n’ Talk device, a travel pouch, a earphone and microphone and the user manual.

The first time you use your Plug N’ Talk, you will be given instructions to download the Softphone, which is the program you use to operate the device from your computer.  It looks just like a phone except it’s right on your screen!    Inserting the device into a USB port automatically launches the Softphone application.  Ang bilis, ang dali!

Having an active Plug N’ Talk gives you toll free access to Smart Customer Service Hotline 24/7 by dialing *888 from the Softphone.

Don’t forget, the best way to load your Smart Plug N’ Talk is with Aryty!! :) We are still the  fastest, cheapest, safest, and most reliable e-loading service around.  Siguradong tanggap agad!!  Log onto your Aryty account or create and account with us by visiting www.aryty.com.  New sign ups immediately get a free load to send. :)

Ate’s visit to San Francisco

by Clarissa

Noong nakaraang weekend, bumisita ang ate ko galing Vancouver. I’m sure everyone agrees that the thing you miss most when you live abroad is family.

The San Francisco bay area is one of the best places to live and visit.
